It can be a very interesting experience writing reviews on the different cordless drills out there. Cordless drills are one of those things that I have used many times in my life, but never really looked into what actually makes a good drill a good drill.

I was always under the assumption that a drill was simply used to make holes in the wall and just buy the one you could afford.

I found out very quickly that I was very wrong. There are so many different cordless drills to choose from, I realised if I was going to do this properly, I would have to go through them with a fine tooth comb.

While doing this research I came across the Panasonic EY6432GQKW Cordless Drill.

What I learned very quickly was that there were common denominators that kept cropping up whilst doing my research and that these were important to consider when purchasing a drill.

These common denominators or criteria were – whether the drill has a brake; the speed of the drill; how heavy the drill is; what kind of battery the drill uses and how many volts power the drill.

It would be very easy just to pick a drill at random that fits well enough within your budget, but this could cause you many problems. By following the criteria I will be looking at the Panasonic EY6432GQW.

Brake

Unlike many less expensive drills, the Panasonic EY6432GQW has a helpful brake, which means that when you let go of the trigger, the drill stops turning straight away. This makes it safer to use in a home environment, preventing children or animals from hurting themselves by touching the drill immediately after you have stopped it.

Speed Settings

The Panasonic EY6432GQW has 2 speed settings, lower speeds of 0 to 400 RPM and higher speeds of 0 to 1300 RPM. This allows you to be able to alter the speed of the drill, meaning you can use it on a slower speed setting for greater control.

Batteries

The EY6432GQW uses the NiMH type batteries which is thought to be the to use in cordless drills. They have a longer life and weigh much less than NiCad, as well as being quicker to charge.

Panasonic have stated that the battery will take around 55 minutes to charge, but that it also can be charged to 15% using the 5 minute emergency option.

Voltage

Undeniably, one of the most important criteria of cordless drills is the voltage. The higher the voltage, the quicker the motor will be able to spin and provide more power to the drill. The negative aspect of high voltage cordless drills is that the battery is generally heavier and this in turn makes the drill heavier.

You need to consider how often and how long you will be using your cordless drill. If you are using it often, you don’t want anything too heavy or you will feel the effects of it later.

The EY6432GQW is powered by 15.6 volts making it a powerful cordless drill, while still only weighing a comfortable 4.8lbs.

Chuck

This Panasonic cordless drill features a 1/2 inch sized chuck, whereas the usual size for a chuck on cordless drills is 3/8 inch. This allows you to be able to drill larger holes by using bigger drill bits, giving you more flexibility with the types of jobs you can do.

You will also find the keyless chuck helpful, allowing you to be able to tighten and release the bit with one hand, making it simpler and easier to do.

Any Issues

The only negative comments I found about this drill was that it can be hard to center smaller drill bits inside the larger sized chuck. Though, the solution to this is to close the chuck more before putting the bit into it.

My research found that the best price seems to always be at Amazon, who are also offering free delivery. There price is equal or often better than many of the other places I searched.
